Randy Savage had been married twice. His first marriage was with Elizabeth Hulette, also known as “Miss Elizabeth.” They were working together in the pro wrestling business with Elizabeth appearing on the screen as his valet. In May 2010, Savage married Barbara Lynn Payne.

On the morning of May 20, 2011, Randy Savage died at 58 years of age due to a sudden heart attack while driving his wife Barbara in Seminole, Florida. Time Magazine named Macho Man as one of its People of the Year. In 2015, he was introduced to the WWE Hall of Fame.

The Career of Randy Savage

Right out of high school, Poffo was signed by the St. Louis Cardinals at the age of 18 and placed in the junior leagues to become an outfielder. In the 1950s and 1960s, he became a well-known pro wrestler. He even appeared in “Ripley’s Believe It or Not!” for his unique ability to sit-up for hours and hours. Poffo entered the professional wrestling business in 1973 during the baseball season. His original wrestling character was “The Spider” and was comparable to “The Spider-Man.”

He eventually took the name “Randy Savage” after his long-time trainer Terry “The Goose” Stephens. Georgia Championship Wrestling booker Ole Anderson also told him that the name Poffo did not fit someone who “wrestled like a savage” who also contributed to his choice of name.

Joining World War II in June 1985, Macho Man had such an effect that he won his first World War II title just one year later. Savage turned into a WrestleMania staple right off the bat, making his introduction to The Greatest Stage of Them All at WrestleMania 2, where he defended the Intercontinental Championship against the frightening and fugitive George “The Animal” Steele. From that point on, he kept the title until WrestleMania III missed the mark against Ricky Steamboat in what is considered by many individuals to be perhaps one of the best matches ever.

Achievement continued to compete with Macho Man in 1988 when he won a massive WrestleMania IV tournament to win his first World Championship. During his reign as champion, he and Hulk Hogan set up one of the most impressive tag teams ever to step into the ring. The Mega Powers have destroyed any team that has challenged them. Miss Elizabeth, a misconception and a pinch of jealous rage, sent Savage into anger at NBC’s The Main Event, driving him to attack his tag team partner. The two took their fight to the WrestleMania V-ring, and Hogan won the World Championship.
