In 1966, when he acquired NeXT, he joined Apple. In 1999, Craig left the company for Ariba, an IT company, where he was Chief Technology Officer. He led MacOS engineering and went back to Apple in 2009. Where he helped Bertrand Serlet introduce Mac OS X Snow Leopard, he made his first appearance on stage during a major Apple event at WWDC 2009.

Federighi succeeded Bertrand Serlet as Vice President of Mac Software Engineering at Apple on 23 March 2011.
