Cathryn Sealey’s husband John Nettles is a Cornish actor and writer who is famous for appearing in the long-running television series Bergerac and Midsomer Murders.  He attended St Austell School. After matriculating, he went to the University of Southampton to study history and philosophy.

During his time at the university, he got his first acting experience and later he pursue acting as a career. Then he joining the Royal Court Theatre after graduation.

In the year 1969, he made one of his first professional appearances in Tom Courtenay’s “Hamlet”. There he played the character Laertes. Then he appeared at the Northcott Theatre. Before he appeared there, he got his first screen role in the film entitled “One More Time”.

From the year 1981 to 1991, he played Jim Bergerac in the series Bergerac. After that, Nettles was cast in the television series Midsomer Murders from 1997 to 2011. There he played the role of DCI Tom Barnaby. He announced to leave Midsomer Murders in February 2009. On February 2, 2011, he made his final appearance on-screen by which time he had appeared in 81 episodes. On his departure, he commented that:

“It’s always wise to leave people wanting more, rather than be booed off the stage because you bored them”.

After that, he appeared in the television series Poldark from 2016 to 2017. There he played the role of Ray Penvenen. However, his career began on stage when he starred in Hamlet at the University Theater in Manchester. Likewise, he told the BBC documentary series Airport between the year 1996 to 2005. In the year 2010, he presented and produced the documentary Channel Islands at War.

He had written Bergerac’s Jersey (BBC Books, 1988). The book is a travel guide to filming locations in the series during the filming of Bergerac, filmed on the island of Jersey. He also followed up with John Nettles’ Jersey: A Personal View of the People and Places (BBC Books, 1992). It is about the island’s landscape, personalities, and history.

In the year 1991, he published a book of semi-autobiographical Nudity in a Public Place: Confessions of a Mini Celebrity (Robson Books). It is about becoming a “reluctant heartthrob” to female viewers of Bergerac. Besides, he also wrote Jewels and Jackboot (Hardback ) in 2012The book is about the German occupation of the Channel Islands.
