He continued his Ivy League career and hold a record of percentage with 66.5% (366–550). He made the league record with the percentage of 68.2% (204–299) in 1988 but it was later broken by Gavin Hoffman with the percentage of 70.5% mark.

Jason Garrett started his professional career as a free agent for the New Orleans Saints in the 1989 NFL Draft. He later signed to the practice squad. Jason was later dismissed by the Saints on September 3, 1990. After that, he worked as a coaching assistant for Princeton for many years.

Then in 1991, he began to play as a quarterback for the San Antonio Riders of the World League of American Football. During that time, he suffered a separated right shoulder in the season opener due to which he returned to start the sixth and seventh game but was passed on the depth chart by Mike Johnson. On June 4, 1991, Jason signed a contract with the Ottawa Rough Riders team of the Canadian Football League. He was the starter for the game played against the Phoenix Cardinals and he finished the game with 2 of 6 passes for 25 yards and helped the team score on a field goal.

Further, he also led the Dallas Cowboys against the Green Bay Packers. He finished the game with 15 of 26 passes for 311 yards and 2 touchdowns with a win of 42-31. And Jason earned the NFC Offensive Player of the Week honors. He played in 39 games in the eighth season with the Cowboys. He completed the season with 165 of 294 passes (56.1%) for 2,042 yards, 11 touchdowns, and five interceptions with a 6-3 record.

After playing for many years, he gets retire from his playing career in 2004 and became the quarterback coach of the Miami Dolphins from 2005 to 2006. Currently, he is serving as the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys.
